SET TO RISE TO NEW HEIGHTS
The world’s biggest greyhound slot race will become the world’s richest individual greyhound race, as Melbourne Greyhounds and Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) today announce that the 2022 The Phoenix will carry a winner’s purse of $1 million for the second running of the event.
To be held on Saturday 17 December 2022 at The Meadows, The prize money for the Phoenix will increase by $505,000, bringing total stakes to $1.65 million.
The rise in prizemoney will coincide with an increase in slot price to $100,000, up from $75,000 for the inaugural running of the race.
Melbourne Greyhounds CEO Scott Wuchatsch added that The Phoenix perfectly complimented the elite racing objective of the Melbourne Greyhounds. Interest in the 2022 edition of the race is already strong, particularly given the return to The Meadows of last year’s The Phoenix winner and greyhound racing superstar Wow She’s Fast, who blew her rivals away in a heat of the Group 1 Maturity Classic on Saturday night.
“The Meadows is renowned for elite Group 1 racing, conducting events such as the Australian Cup, Topgun and Temlee. The Phoenix has the potential to become the biggest and invoke the most public interest of all the events held throughout the year by the club. Its potential is limitless”, said Scott.
GRV’s Acting CEO Stuart Laing said the prizemoney increase cements The Phoenix as one of world’s most sought-after greyhound races.
“The inaugural running of The Phoenix was an outstanding success, that clearly resonated with a new generation of greyhound racing fans. The increase in prizemoney will further entrench the race as one of the most significant events on the world greyhound racing calendar”.
Former Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine AO will again lead the Independent Assessment Panel (IAP) who will have the responsibility for selecting the successful eight slot holders.
